JWGC2015 Mascots and Shirts

Tuesday 1 December 2015: 1st Competition Day – Let the fun begin. Last night team captain Mandy Temple sent out a message to the team: “Gridding from 9:00 to 11:00, expect first launch 11:45. Team briefing in Aussie Base 9:30.” With possible storms forecast later in the day the task setters probably want to get everyone home before that, hence the earlier start. The plan

JWGC2015 Opening Ceremony

Monday 30 November 2015: The day of the Opening Ceremony is also Eric’s birthday. The girls had got together and organised team T-shirts for all of us as a birthday surprise for him. As there was no flying we used the day for a few last minute jobs and errands but mainly to rest up for the competition days ahead. Then we dressed up in our Aussie team uniforms

All Flags are up

Friday 27 Nov to Sunday 29 Nov 2015: The Practice Days We are officially registered and got our tags with the appropriate coloured lanyard. The lanyard colour together with the photo ID allows access to the corresponding areas. Beats me why the crews who get access to most areas including airside and hangars don’t need a photo. Maybe we are not pretty enough? The first

Welcome to JWGC2015 Narromine

Saturday 22 Nov to Thursday 26 Nov 2015: The last week has been incredibly busy with preparations which is why this blog has suffered a bit and this post is another dump. (And here I thought we could get away for a few days to relax like the boys.) While Jess was setting up the administration and registration office, Joanne her merchandise shop, I got roped in for

The Road to Narromine

Saturday 21 Nov 2015: Moving the Circus to Narromine After a relatively late night celebrating the official and unofficial champions we got up early and Eric and I derigged the glider into its trailer in the cooler morning air. Most competitors had done that straight after landing in the heat and causing some chaos in the tie-downs. Gliders being pulled off the runway had to

Sunset over Lake Keepit

Friday 19 Nov 2015 (continued): Final Night Dinner and Trophy Awards The sun sets on another competition and it is official – we have the unofficial Australian Club Class Champion in the family! Eric lost some ground today to Terry Cubley who pulled out all the stops to claw his way to the top but remained in the lead by almost 100 points. The Juniors

Friday 19 Nov 2015 (continued): Waiting for the Scores It was a difficult task not only weather-wise but also in terms of airspace restrictions which is a rare occurrence in Australian competitions. Flying tactics needed to be changed a few times for the different areas, some requiring a more cautious approach and others much faster cruise speeds. Flying too fast in one region saw quite

Training for JWGC2015 – A Crew Perspective (Lake Keepit Nationals 2015)

Friday 19 Nov 2015: 9th and Final Competition Day We are about to pass another milestone in this journey. One more task, the final dinner and then we’ll move the show to Narromine. At briefing this morning the last task was set. The weather would be similar and equally challenging as yesterday. Although he can’t officially win, Eric is currently in the lead in Club

Training for JWGC2015 – A Crew Perspective (Lake Keepit Nationals 2015)

Thursday 19 Nov 2015: 8th Competition Day As I write this Eric and Joe are on their final leg and should be home in about 1hr. Dylan in Standard Class is also on his way back. He is again without his team mate but he showed yesterday that he flies just as well on his own. There were a surprising number of outlandings yesterday. Joe
